Quick answer

Amend with Form 1040-X if you left out income, claimed the wrong filing status, or missed a deduction or credit. Don't amend for math errors the IRS already fixed. Amended returns take about 8 to 12 weeks, sometimes up to 16. "Completed" means processing is done and the details are coming by mail, not that money is on the way.

You hit "file," then found a 1099 in a drawer. Or realized you missed a credit. It happens to careful people all the time. Fixing a return is usually straightforward; the confusing part is knowing whether you need to, and what the IRS tracker means afterward.

When you should amend

File Form 1040-X if something on your return was wrong in a way that changes your tax: income you left out, the wrong filing status, a dependent, or a deduction or credit you missed or claimed by mistake.

When you shouldn't

If the IRS corrected a math error itself, you'll get a notice explaining it, and you don't need to amend. The same goes if the IRS accepted your return without a form and later asks you to send it. Just respond to their letter. Amending in those cases can create confusion and slow things down.

Also, if you received a CP2000 and agree with it, you generally don't need to amend; respond to the notice instead.

How to amend

Form 1040-X can be e-filed for the current year and the two prior years, and refunds from amended returns for 2021 and later can go to direct deposit. Older years must be filed on paper. In Georgia, a corrected state return uses Form 500X, and if the IRS changes your federal return, you must report it to Georgia within 180 days.

"Completed" means processed, not paid.

What the amended-return tracker means

The IRS "Where's My Amended Return?" tool shows your amendment about 3 weeks after you file. Processing usually takes 8 to 12 weeks and sometimes up to 16. The statuses:

Received: it's being processed. Adjusted: the IRS changed your account, which could mean a refund, a balance due, or no change. Completed: processing is finished and the IRS will mail you the details.

That last one trips people up online all the time. "Completed" doesn't promise a refund or a deposit date. Watch for the letter.

Don't wait too long

To get money back through an amended return, you generally have three years from when you filed the original (or two years from when you paid the tax, if later). After that, the refund is lost.
